ROBERTO OTTAVIANO

Born in Bari, Roberto Ottaviano is one of the best-known Italian saxophonists. He studies saxophone with Federico Mondelci and Steve Lacy, and composing and arranging with Bill Russo and George Russell. Since 1979, he has intense concert and record activity all over Europe, collaborating with some of the most important American and European musicians like Mal Waldron, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Keith Tippett, Ray Anderson, Enrico Rava, Han Bennink, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Dresser, Paul Bley, Graham Haynes, Myra Melford, Tony Oxley, Ran Blake, Steve Swallow, Henri Texier, Ralph Alessi, and Marc Ducret. He runs his own quartet Pinturas and the Roba quartet with Glenn Ferris, Jean Jacques Avenel and John Betsch. Ottaviano is part of the Canto General quintet with Louis Moholo and Karl Berger All Stars. Ottaviano was a member of Italian Instabile Orchestra as well. His discography is rich and varied, with recordings for Red, Splasch, Soul Note, Dodicilune , Hat Art, Intakt , ECM, DIW and Ogun. As a teacher, he founded the Jazz course at the Conservatory in his hometown and he is coordinator for nearly 30 years. His last solo project called “Lontano” is part of small series of solo projects, this one focusing on the idea of ​​migration and nomadism.
